| Malabar Christian College, established in 1909 by the Basel Evangelical Missionaries of Switzerland, stands today as a Heritage Institution at the heart of the city. At a time when education remained the privilege of the elite, the German missionary founders opened its doors to all, including women, the lower castes, and the underprivileged, laying the foundation for a legacy of inclusive, non-discriminatory education that the College continues to uphold. The Department of Botany, one of the oldest departments of the College, carries this legacy forward through a strong commitment to conservation-oriented, field-based learning. |
This version clearly distinguishes the Vision (future aspiration) from the Mission (how the department achieves that vision), making it suitable for a department profile, NAAC documentation, or a college website.
| To be a centre of excellence in plant sciences by fostering scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship while inspiring students to conserve biodiversity and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development. |

The department functions under the guidance of Dr. Bijeesh C, and is well equipped with
microscopes and a preserved specimen collection spanning algae, fungi, lichens, bryophytes,
pteridophytes, and gymnosperms, alongside a maintained herbarium collection.
Practical training follows standardized scientific methods, with taxonomy studies conducted
using live specimens sourced directly from the campus. Herbarium sheets are prepared using
a herbarium plant press, strengthening the department’s hands-on, campus-integrated approach
to teaching. Through these efforts, the department continues to play an active role in the
conservation of campus flora, fauna, and their ecological interactions.
